My husband is a golf enthusiast in every sense of the word. He spends his weekdays at the golf range, fine-tuning his swing like it’s a science, and his weekends at the golf course, chasing birdies and soaking in the sun. Golf isn’t just a hobby for him, it’s his happy place. So when his birthday rolled around, I knew the best gift wouldn’t come wrapped in a box. It had to be something that spoke his language: time on the green, with me by his side.
I surprised him with a 9-hole round at Torrey Pines, one of the most stunning courses I’ve ever seen. The moment we arrived, I understood why he loved it so much. The views were breathtaking, lush fairways rolling toward the Pacific, dramatic cliffs in the distance, and a peaceful hush that made the whole experience feel sacred.
He’s been gently nudging me to learn golf for years. I used to laugh it off, but recently, he even started researching golf clubs for me, sending me links and reviews like a man on a mission. That’s when I realized: maybe the best gift I could give him was my time, and a willingness to step into his world.
⛳ The 9-Hole Birthday Challenge
So I surprised him. On his birthday morning, I told him to grab his clubs because we were going to play a 9-hole round together at Torrey Pines in San Diego. His face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning.
Torrey Pines was the perfect choice. The moment we stepped onto the course, I was struck by the breathtaking views, the lush greens rolling toward the Pacific, the cliffs standing tall in the distance, and the quiet hum of nature all around us. It felt like we’d stepped into a postcard.
I won’t lie: I was nervous. I didn’t even own my own clubs yet, and I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy the game. But I figured this would be a great bonding moment, and maybe even the push I needed to decide whether to invest in my own set.
We spent the afternoon laughing, learning, and yes, occasionally searching for my ball in the rough. But I loved it. The fresh air, the quiet and the shared experience. It was the perfect way to celebrate his birthday and explore something new together.
